The growing process is simple, but not easy.

We grow our phytoplankton on land in a state-of-the-art facility using filtered Atlantic ocean water in Cadiz, Spain. Cadiz’s year-round sunshine provides the perfect condition to continuously grow our product all year, under the highest levels of food safety standards. Our growing process allows us to make sure our phytoplankton is sustainable and free from contaminants. It also means you get pure, high-quality, nutrient-dense phytoplankton with each dose.

Quality & Safety

Quality is a very important part of Karen® Phytoplankton’s production process, with an end product that offers absolute traceability, from the raw materials used, to the end product that reaches our customers. All of this is thanks to production techniques that comply with processing regulations.

These standards are achieved through quality policies focused on the continuous improvement of product development, customer service and assistance, as well as the development of the company’s experience.

We have created and implemented a Food Quality and Safety Management system based on ISO 22000 standards that is constantly monitored and being improved throughout our Quality and Safety Department.

Karen® Phytoplankton and its parent company Fitoplancton Marino, S.L. is the first microalgae production company to receive ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000 certification for the production and processing of microalgae.

We guarantee our products comply with food safety regulations because we apply Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points or HACCP systems. Through this system, we monitor microbiological, chemical and physical hazards along the entire production chain.

Our final product must comply with specifications required by both Karen® Phytoplankton and our customers.

For this, we have quality control laboratories dedicated to verifying that each product is in optimum condition before it reaches our customers.

We guarantee the same level of safety, supply, and service in all the countries we are present.

In addition, in keeping with our strict quality policy, we guarantee that the products we produce and commercialise are duly authorised by the health authorities in each country.

Novel Food and GRAS

In compliance with the strict laws regulating the production and commercialisation of marine microalgae in Europe and in North America, we have obtained the first only authorisation from Novel Food for marine microalgae in Europe, as well as a GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) rating in the United States and Canada. This means we are the only company in the world with these authorisations and, as such, we can produce and commercialise our products for human nutrition.

Because we are dealing with the microbiological culture of organisms, we must establish specific protocols and registers to guarantee the innocuousness of these organisms. This involves correct manipulation and management of the different processes. These are regulated and inspected by the health authorities and it is obligatory to obtain a health certificate. Karen® Phytoplankton and Fitoplancton Marino, S.L. is the only company that has obtained these health certificates and authorisations.
